Project Statement
This project consisted of experimenting with constructing volumetric space and form while focusing on the relationship between the gift and the packaging that contains that gift. Through communication with my mentor, Ashland, I learned about her interests and love. I took one of her interests that really spoke to me (her love of reading) and focused my gift, packaging, and design quote around that one interest to create harmony between my gift (a thumb page holder) and packaging (book box). My goal was to have the packaging of my gift be just as much a gift as the actual gift. I wanted the packaging of my gift to be purposeful and useful for her and for her to be able to use it after the initial gift was removed.

Reflection
This project showed me what it was like to work with a client. Although Ashland did not tell me what she wanted for the gift, as a client would, I really felt like I got to experience what it would be like working with a client: gathering information and creating a design based on the information received. I feel as if I was able to create a gift for my recipient that she loved based on the conversations that I had with her. I believe it is evident that this gift is for Ashland. I struggled with the design of the front cover and the materials I worked with. I wanted the design to be simplistic with fine details; however, I found that with the foil I worked with it was hard to have my design clear in the wood. I am very happy with my exploration of using more challenging materials and my ability to produce something clean from those materials. Overall, I am super happy with my product, I think the time and energy I put into this gift shows.
