Project Overview
This project involved the development of a comprehensive symbol system. Including the symbols’ promotion, implementation, and education for a brand organization/institution. It focused on the research, process methodology, symbol grid/logic, legibility/scale, user comprehension testing, writing, and demonstrating possible applications.
One of four different client projects was assigned to each student (through lottery):
• Wexner Center for the Arts • Franklin Park Conservatory
• Whole Foods Market
• Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks
My assigned client was Whole Foods Market. The referent categories for Whole Foods Market were:
• Frozen Foods: Packaged food in cold storage
• Produce: Fresh fruits, vegetables, and salad greens
• Cheese Counter: Section of artisan cheeses
• Prepared Foods: Both hot and cold offerings, salad bar, soups, pizza
• Meat Counter: Fresh beef, poultry & pork
• Wine, Beer & Spirits: Booze
• Pantry Essentials: Spices
• Bakery: Fresh baked bread, rolls, desserts
• Special Diets: Eating outside the standard American diet doesn’t mean deprivation. Gluten-freevegan, vegetarian (expanded symbol category)
• Recipe Collections: Both hard copy + online recipe resources (expanded symbol category)

Sketches + Iterations
Refinements + Color Studies
Complete Symbol Family
Pattern + Application
I chose to use my produce symbol as the symbol for my pattern. I felt like this symbol was the most complete one and was very pleasing to look at. I also felt like it created a dynamic pattern.
Event Poster
The second deliverable for this project was a poster for an upcoming event related to your client. This poster not only announces, but should educate and familiarize the visiting public with the symbol system. Whole Foods Market’s upcoming event was an Earth Day celebration. I created two different posters based on the concept of the Earth being made up of my eight-ten symbols.
Reflection
This project helped me understand what goes into the development of a comprehensive symbol system. During this project, I furthered my learnings from the previous project while I developed my Whole Foods symbol set. My learnings expanded during this project because I was tasked with symbols’ promotion, implementation, and education for Whole Foods.
