Project Statement
This project consisted of exploring a variety of mediums to build a sketchbook for my personal use. I have always been drawn to old, rustic items. My goal for my sketchbook was to create a vintage-looking sketchbook. By using the leather and the plaid fabric, I wanted to convey that look and feeling. I also wanted flexibility in the spine of my sketchbook, in order to accomplish that goal I chose the traveler’s style notebook as the foundation of my sketchbook.

Reflection
I learned a lot about working with textile materials in this project. Up until this point, I had strictly worked with paper, so it was a fun opportunity to expand my boundaries and knowledge. I struggled with the overall craft of my sketchbook. I sewed everything that I could, in order to help with the craft and the sturdiness of my sketchbook; however, due to my leather coming from a leather jacket, I had to cut the main leather panel for the sketchbook by hand, which I struggled with. I am proud of myself for using materials that would challenge me. Overall, I think I accomplished the rustic, old feeling I was going for, and in a way, it “makes up” for my non-perfect edges because rustic items already tend to have unfinished edges and lines that aren’t perfectly straight. These struggles mainly taught me how to push through my frustrations. There were many times throughout the project that I wanted to switch to an easier material to work with; however, I wanted to prove to myself that I could work with challenging materials.
